Dallas Morning News seeks a business trends reporter

February 3, 2025

Posted by Chris Roush

The Dallas Morning News is searching for an intrepid and curious business trends reporter to cover one of America’s most vibrant economic regions that shows no signs of slowing down.

Come join our team of award-winning journalists who report on the multi-trillion economy in North Texas, helping to cover major companies such as AT&T, Texas Instruments, McKesson, Caterpillar, GameStop and countless others.

The D-FW area is at an exciting crossroads, with the regional economy playing host to a range of strategically important sectors like financial services, technology and semiconductors, private equity, cryptocurrency and more. The reporter’s wide mandate will include coverage of Dallas’ C-Suite, and Main Street. Stories could include diversity initiatives, mergers, politically-sensitive deals, and interesting personalities in the Dallas/North Texas business scene. This person would be charged with finding great enterprise stories and scoops that impact the Metroplex and beyond.

This reporter would cultivate sources at the highest levels of Dallas’ business community, reporting on trends and breaking news that range from the new stock exchange affectionately called “Y’all Street”) to an interview with Dr. Phil about his splashy Fort Worth TV  studio (and the subsequent layoffs). On other days crypto scam victims and major data breaches at local companies could be on the news menu, as could the move to legalize gambling in Texas led by casino magnate Miriam Adelson. And there’s always Mark Cuban, the voluble billionaire closely associated with his stake in the Dallas Mavericks.

It’s a major-league town with no shortage of movement from some of the most powerful business players in the country including the family of Ray Hunt (owner of the Kansas City Chiefs), Ross Perot Jr., Jerry Jones and Alice Walton, along with notable celebrity residents such as Patrick Mahomes and Shaquille O’Neal.

You should be capable of developing a deep sourcebook of the most important decision-makers. You should be willing and able to dive into public records such as building permits and deed filings to get scoops, and scour social media for emerging trends. And you should have an unflappable drive to tell our readers about the booming North Texas economy.

This reporter will be part of one of the largest regional business news teams in the country. Your colleagues will be covering real estate, retail, transportation, airlines, energy and natural resources, and health care – and you’ll be working closely with, and learning from, all of them. The team’s coverage helps to inform the region and make it stronger and more successful.
