Cory Schouten has departed Crain’s New York Business after four years as editor in chief.

Schouten, who previously led the New Formats team at The Wall Street Journal, delivered significant audience growth, hosted a live journalism series featuring top newsmakers and shepherded award-winning journalism at CNYB.

The brand earned the top award for General Excellence from SABEW for 2022 and 2023 and an honorable mention for 2024; picked up three Gold awards this year in the investigative, feature and multimedia categories from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers; and won the 2025 Stan Cohen award for overall excellence from parent company Crain Communications for its coverage of New York City’s nonprofit “Shadow Government.”

“I’m proud of this newsroom and the great work they do,” said Schouten, who is also an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia Journalism School. “They’re scrappy, smart and kind and will continue to punch above their weight in breaking news and finding one-of-a-kind stories that explain how the city works.”

Schouten is working on a book proposal and plans to do a lot of hiking while he considers leadership roles that align with his passion for building teams, experimenting with storytelling formats and developing coverage that breaks through the noise.
