Crain Communication is shutting Green Market Report, a publication that covered the cannabis industry, immediately.
The staff has been laid off with the exception of John Schroyer, a reporter who will write for its city publications.
Crain Communications acquired the publication in 2021 for an undisclosed amount. Green Market Report was launched in 2017 by co-founders Debra Borchardt, a financial journalist and former Wall Street executive, and Cynthia Salarizadeh, a public relations expert and legal cannabis industry insider.
“With little momentum for legalization of cannabis in Washington anytime soon, it makes sense to redouble our efforts around coverage in our local markets. John Schroyer, who had been reporting for Green Market, will now join our reporting teams across the Crain City Brands already covering the cannabis business locally.”
Borchardt has been executive editor and is based in New York.
“It is truly heartbreaking,” wrote Borchardt on LinkedIn. “I had an amazing team and we left it all on the field. My mission was to protect and look out for the small retail investor. I wanted to celebrate the winners and expose the bad players.”
