Cheddar founder Steinberg leaving company

Jon Steinberg, the founder, former anchor and CEO of Cheddar, which has been described as business news for millennials, is leaving the parent company.

He founded Cheddar in 2016 and joined Altice USA in 2019 as part of the company’s acquisition of Cheddar News. He will serve as an advisor tover the next several months in advance of his departure this spring, and, after a period of transition, will return to his entrepreneurial roots.

“In looking back on my time leading both Cheddar and the Altice News & Advertising group, I remain immensely proud of the work that our teams have done in serving our viewers with the highest quality news reporting,” he said in a statement.

Before starting Cheddar, he was most recently the chief executive officer of DailyMail.com North America.

He joined DailyMail.com from BuzzFeed where he was president and chief operating officer, responsible for business management, company operations, finance, and social advertising operations. Under his leadership, BuzzFeed became a global and profitable social advertising business working with over half of the top 100 brands.

Steinberg was previously strategic partner development manager on Google’s SMB (small medium business) partnerships team. Prior to Google, Steinberg was the director of business development at Majestic Research and the founder of iBuilding, a commercial real estate software company.

Steinberg is a graduate of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and holds an M.B.A. from Columbia University.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
