David Merritt, head of media editorial, and Katie Boyce, senior executive editor of digital editorial, sent out the following to Bloomberg staff:
We’re pleased to announce that Joel Weber is taking on a new role within Digital as the head of the Bloomberg Explains team, a new part of the newsroom charged with prioritizing our approach to explanatory journalism across our platforms.
As part of our ongoing efforts to deepen relationships with digital subscribers, creating coverage that adds context and utility to their daily lives is more important than ever. Explainers are key to that strategy, so in this new role Joel will oversee our existing explainer team with a mandate to innovate our approaches across web, Terminal, video, audio and events. But we’re also broadening this role to accomplish more than explainers. Joel will work with the newsroom to create and curate a suite of service-based content, including guides, how-to’s, lists, and tools. We’re also excited for this group to develop more game-centric ways of engaging and entertaining our audience with habit-forming, competition-driven and news-adjacent experiences for bloomberg.com and beyond, collaborating with newsroom leads and product teams in both Media and Core.Joel has spent the last six years as the editor of Bloomberg Businessweek building relationships across the newsroom to publish quality journalism worth paying for. We’re thrilled he’s going to take that expertise, apply it in new ways across platforms and help deepen engagement with our audience. Please join us in congratulating Joel on his new role.Dave & Katie
