Patricia Laya
Andean bureau chief Patricia Laya is becoming a senior editor for Bloomberg News.
Laya will be based in Mexico City and will move later this year.
Laya, a past Nieman Fellow, has been based in Venezuela and Colombia since 2017. She was previously in Washington as an economics reporter.
Laya started working in Bloomberg in 2012 and has since worked out of the New York office covering emerging markets, one year in Madrid covering Spanish oil and gas companies, and three years in Mexico City covering billionaire Carlos Slim and the Latin American telecommunications and media industry.
During her time in South America, Laya led coverage in Venezuela through a deep economic crisis and the pandemic, and most recently, Maduro’s capture. During that time the bureau broke many news on U. .sanctions policy, illegal gold sales, cabinet shakeups, and more.
She is a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate.
