Bloomberg names VanderMey team leader for VC and startups coverage

Bloomberg’s Brad Stone, senior executive editor for global technology, sent out the following on Thursday:

Hi folks, I’m thrilled to announce several changes to the Bloomberg Global Technology team.

Effectively immediately, Anne VanderMey becomes team leader for our US venture capital and startups group. Anne’s promotion will put her at the helm of our award-winning squad of reporters covering tech’s most innovative and valuable new businesses and the people and firms that fund them. Anne has proven her mettle as an editor for the past five years on VC/Startups, where she has brought her sharp news judgment and deft touch with language to breaking stories and engaging features. She’s worked with Bloomberg tech journalists across regions to oversee the assignment and editing of our Tech Daily newsletter, helping to more than triple its subscriber base, and applying her substantial expertise on digital platforms to our web efforts teamwide.

Before joining Bloomberg in 2018, Anne was a senior editor at Fortune magazine, and has worked as a reporter at Fortune, the Hartford Courant and Businessweek. She’s a graduate of the University of Michigan, and if you ever want to go sailing, she’s officially certified to captain your 45-foot boat. We’re all excited to embark on the next leg of our VC and startups coverage with Anne as our skipper. She will report to Jillian Ward.

I am also very excited to announce a new addition to our team: Aisha Counts, who will join our group covering social media giants including Twitter and Meta. She previously wrote for Protocol, where she broke news on enterprise software companies.

Aisha has a keen understanding of corporate strategy. Before her journalism career, she spent a few years advising tech, media and finance clients as a senior management consultant for Ernst & Young. She switched to journalism, deciding she had a passion for explaining to the public how business decisions impact our world. She’s also considered social media’s role in her own life; in 2020, she took a break from the platforms for an entire year.

Aisha currently lives in Los Angeles, where she was a 2017 graduate from the University of Southern California with dual degrees in philosophy and business administration. Soon, she’ll relocate to San Francisco and will report to Sarah Frier.

Finally, Mark Bergen, our distinguished climate tech reporter and resident YouTube expert, is making a big move – transitioning to the tech team in London. There, he’ll report to Amy Thomson and dig into the European startup and venture capital scene. Mark has been such an important contributor to all our Google coverage even after his shift to the climate beat and we’ll still be in close touch with him on the other side of the pond. For a sample of the talents he’ll bring to the new beat, read his 2022 nonfiction book, “Like, Comment Subscribe: Inside YouTube’s Chaotic Rise to World Domination.”
