Bloomberg hires WSJ’s Purnell to cover tech in Hong Kong

Bloomberg News has hired Newley Purnell to cover technology in Hong Kong.

He has been at The Wall Street Journal covering tech across Asia, with an emphasis on U.S. “titans’ battles” in global markets.

Prior to joining the Journal, Purnell was with Bloomberg BNA working as a special correspondent covering business and economic issues in Southeast Asia. Before that, he served as a stringer at ABC News where he covered breaking news, mostly in Thailand.

He was also the Southeast Asia correspondent for The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Purnell is a B.A. in English from Emory University and a M.A. in business and economics journalism from Columbia University.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
