Lucas Shaw, team leader of entertainment, media, telecom and sports at Bloomberg News, sent out the following to the staff on Thursday:
Ashley Carman, who reports on the audio business for The Verge, is joining Bloomberg to cover audio (podcasts/music) and the creator economy out of New York. Money is flooding into these industries and Ashley is already one of the best reporters covering them. She has provided vital analysis of the podcasting business in particular as author of the HotPod newsletter, and just broke a couple of big stories during the latest Spotify-Joe Rogan controversy. She will continue to deliver scoops and features, and she will also write a new weekly newsletter (You can sign up here.) As someone who writes about many of those subjects, I can’t wait to have someone do it full-time and collaborate with people across the newsroom.
Thomas Buckley is joining our team to help cover Hollywood. He joins us from the consumer team in London, where he has demonstrated an aptitude and ambition for breaking news, writing magazine features and thinking outside the box. His Pret Index, a data visualization that tracked people returning to work using foot traffic at Pret a Manger, was a big hit. He’s been keen to move out to Los Angeles and bolster our entertainment
coverage, and he’s arriving at a great time. The movie business has just gone through a wrenching two years, and is trying to figure out its future.
Ashley will start next week, while Thomas is going to move over in the coming months. We are trying to build the best team covering the business of pop culture, and adding two gifted reporters should improve our coverage in areas of great interest to our readers (and investors). Please reach out if you have any questions, and welcome to Ashley and Thomas!
