Sarah Frier, Bloomberg’s Big Tech team leader, sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

I’m very excited to announce that Davey Alba will be joining us to help cover Google and Big Tech power in all its forms. She will start in May, based in New York.

Davey comes to Bloomberg after almost three years at the New York Times, where she focused on explaining how misinformation spreads online and warps society, most recently with the war in Ukraine. Previously she worked at Buzzfeed, where she won prestigious awards for her investigation into President Rodrigo Duterte using Facebook to fuel a drug war. She also worked for Wired, Gizmodo and Popular Mechanics. At Bloomberg, she’s excited to continue exploring the influence that big tech companies like Google have on the health of our political and cultural discourse, as well as the growing impact of relative newcomers like TikTok.

Davey grew up in Manila, where she attended De La Salle University before moving to the United States in 2010. She has a masters in science journalism from Columbia University. Recently, she started taking pottery classes. One day, she hopes to make a mug she can stamp with the logo for Jollibee, her favorite Filipino fast food restaurant.

Please join me in welcoming our new colleague!

After 7 years of distinguished Google coverage, including five at Bloomberg, Mark Bergen is taking on an expanded role where he will explore the intersection of technology, sustainability and climate change — telling the story of innovation in a critical field while calling out the hype and broken promises. We’re still very excited to read his YouTube book when it comes out in September!

Congratulations to Mark!
