Meredith Klein of “Meredith & The Money” interviewed Adweek executive editor Alison Weissbrot about her career.
Here is an excerpt:
As an Executive Editor for ADWEEK, you oversee the agency, brand, and creative teams and help to shape overall newsroom coverage. Can you walk us through a day in your role?
No day is ever the same. First thing when I wake up, I check the news, I check my Slack, I check texts and my inbox to see if anything crazy happened overnight that could change the course of my day. Then, on a normal day, with no breaking news, I will get to the office three days a week and check email and see what pitches have come in. I’ll review them and see what I can assign out to the team, check what the reporters are working on and set them up for the day, and then edit their copy throughout the day. Some days, I have a story I need to write.
If I’m in the office, I’ll have a meeting with a source over lunch or coffee to see what’s going on. I also manage ADWEEK’s awards, so I work with our awards manager to make sure everything is running smoothly. And sometimes I’m assigning a freelancer to write copy for the magazine or other things. I try to make a to-do list, but it depends what’s flying at me in that moment.
