Washington Post’s Garcia-Ruiz named SF Chronicle editor-in-chief

The San Francisco Chronicle has tapped Washington Post’s Emilio Garcia-Ruiz as its new editor-in-chief.

Garcia-Ruiz has been with the Post for 19 years, joining in 2001 as deputy sports editor.

Through the course of his career at the Post, Garcia-Ruiz rose in ranks, holding the posts of sports editor, local editor, editor for strategic projects, and most recently holding the post of managing editor, digital.

Garcia-Ruiz has also worked as a sports analyst at Telemundo 64, a weekly Spanish-language segment on Washington D.C. sports scene for local affiliate. He also served as a sports editor at St. Paul Pioneer Press and held various titles during this three-year career at Los Angeles Times.

Additionally, he was also assistant sports editor at The Orange County Register and has also served as copy/night sports editor at The Washington Post.

Garcia-Ruiz holds a B.A. in journalism from University of Maryland.
