Washington Post taps Mourtoupalas as graphics reporter

Nick Mourtoupalas

The following was sent out from The Washington Post’s director of graphics Chiqui Esteban and deputy graphics director Tim Meko:

We are happy to announce that Nick Mourtoupalas is joining the Graphics team as a graphics reporter.

Nick, currently a news copy aide, has been at The Post for five years, during which he worked shifts in Metro, Logistics, Photo, Design and Graphics. He has also worked News Operations shifts on weekends and nights whenever needed, so many of you around the newsroom know him well. He also helped to maintain our in-office operations from March 2020 onward even as the company-wide work-from-home policy went into effect.

This move was a long time coming. Nick’s love for journalism started when he copy-edited and wrote for the Sherwood High School newspaper, the Warrior, with his lifelong friends. He then studied economics at the University of Maryland at College Park, where he grew passionate about the meaning behind the numbers and demographics that affect our everyday decision-making. After an internship at the Kiplinger Letter, just a few blocks from our building, he became a news aide at The Post. Meanwhile, he completed a six-month full-stack data analytics and visualization bootcamp at George Washington University, where he deployed interactive visualizations made using D3.js, Leaflet.js, and more, knowledge he put in practice helping the Graphics Department with charts, maps and building some projects.

In his free time, you can see Nick, born and raised in Olney, Md., taking photos with his film camera, exploring new cities, and adding to his personal map of things to do in D.C., a map you should definitely ask him to show you.

Please join us in congratulating Nick, whose first full day in Graphics will be Monday.
