Washington Post hires Hernandez as deputy national security editor

Efrain Hernandez Jr. will join The Washington Post as deputy national security editor. Hernandez comes from the Los Angeles Times, where he has worked on the metro, national and foreign desks.

He begins on May 16.

Hernandez joined the Times in 1994, where he covered L.A. as a general assignment reporter. He then became a deputy metro editor and was promoted to editor on the foreign desk. In 2015, he served as editor of the merged foreign and national desks.

He was also director of the Los Angeles Times Fellowship from 2002 to 2007. Previously, he worked at The Boston Globe. Additionally, he has also written for the Hartford Courant in Connecticut and Hispanic Link News Service in D.C.

Hernandez was also a member of multiple Pulitzer Prize-winning teams at the Los Angeles Times.

Hernandez has served as the Pulitzer Prize’s national jury chairman in 2019 and as an international jury member in 2018. He is also a longtime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, a member and former board member of CCNMA-Latino Journalists of California, and a member of Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists and the L.A. Press Club.
