The Washington Post has tapped Samantha Schmidt as Bogotá bureau chief, a new position that extends The Post’s global footprint and adds a critical post in South America.
Schmidt joined The Post in 2016 as a writer on Morning Mix. She then joined Metro in 2018 as a gender and family issues reporter. Schmidt will be moving to Foreign in May after wrapping up some projects for the social issues team.
In Bogotá, she will become part of an Americas team that includes the Post’s correspondents in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Miami and Toronto.
Previously, Schmidt was a James Reston reporting fellow at The New York Times reporting on New York City breaking news, general assignments and enterprise features.
She was also campus editor Fall 2013 and investigations reporter and editor at Indiana Daily Student. She has also interned at Tampa Bay Times, Star Tribune, Dow Jones and Minneapolis Star Tribune. She was also a freelance reporter at American City Business Journal.
She has also served as president of National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Schmidt is a B.A. in journalism and Arabic language from Indiana University.
