WaPo welcomes back Bank as ME, audience and visual journalism

The following excerpt was sent out from The Washington Post:

Justin Bank

The Washington Post today named Justin Bank as Managing Editor, Audience & Visual Journalism. Working closely with The Post’s engineering and product teams, Bank will lead newsroom areas focused on audience growth and strategy, curation and distribution, new story formats and visual journalism.

Bank returns to The Washington Post after serving as the newsroom’s first editor focused on SEO in 2010. During his tenure, he managed a portfolio that grew to include social media, analytics, and reader engagement. He also launched the General Assignment team to cover breaking news and report on broader internet culture.

Bank most recently served as the Senior Director of Digital News and Strategy at NPR where he oversaw the digital newsroom with a key focus on streamlining the creation of digital content in closer coordination with radio show production with new story forms such as live blogs.

Prior to that, Bank founded the inaugural Audience Development team at The New York Times. There he helped create new approaches to coverage such as the Smarter Living vertical; advised on strategic acquisitions; coordinated with marketing and product division to develop cross-discipline consumer revenue strategies; and developed new story forms for fact-checking during the Trump administration.

Justin began his career as a writer at Fact-check.org during the Bush and Obama administrations. In 2019, he consulted with and advised dozens of media organizations around the globe on building out consumer revenue strategies.
