WaPo names Faiola Rome bureau chief

The following excerpt was sent out from The Washington Post’s foreign editor Douglas Jehl, deputy foreign editor Jennifer Amur and Europe editor Marisa Bellack:

Anthony Faiola

We’re thrilled to announce that Anthony Faiola will become our next Rome bureau chief, beginning this spring.

Tony is one of The Post’s most experienced foreign correspondents, and he could not be a better fit for this role. During previous tours in London and Berlin, he spent nearly a decade covering the Vatican, building sources and expertise on a beat that will be a big part of his portfolio in Rome. Tony has also devoted years to covering global migration, an issue that will be central to his responsibilities in covering Italy and its place as a gateway to Europe.

Tony studied Italian at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, a formative moment that inspired him to pursue a career as a foreign correspondent.

Tony joined The Post in 1994 and has been a correspondent in Washington, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, New York, London and Berlin. He speaks fluent Spanish. For the past five years, he has been based in Miami, first as South America bureau chief and more recently as a correspondent at large, with reporting assignments divided between Latin America and Europe. He is the winner of multiple awards, and he co-anchored a multimedia project on the rise of immigration barriers around the world that won the National Press Foundation’s prize for innovative storytelling in 2017.
