WaPo forms Standards desk, announces two staff moves

The Washington Post announces the formation of a Standards desk to protect the integrity of news reporting and support Post journalists. Meghan Ashford-Grooms of Kaiser Health News and Carrie Camillo, the deputy editor of the Talent Network, will be The Post’s standards editors, reporting to Deputy Managing Editor Liz Seymour.

Meghan will focus her efforts on updating, explaining and enforcing existing newsroom policies and creating new policies that offer clear guidance on Post standards and ethics. Carrie will be the lead editor on issues of language and taste, will oversee the corrections policy, and will work closely with the multiplatform editing desk.

Meghan, pronounced ME-gun, is currently deputy copy chief at Kaiser Health News. She was previously a senior editor and copy chief at FiveThirtyEight and a copy editor and reporter at the Austin American-Statesman. She also spent a few years of her career outside of a newsroom (but she always came running back) as a senior editor at the Urban Institute and a policy analyst at the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island.

Meghan grew up in Nashville and majored in classics at Columbia University. She also received a master’s degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. She was an advisory board member for the Knight Science Journalism Fact-Checking Project.

 

Carrie, one of the newsroom’s most beloved editors, who celebrates 20 years at The Post this month, brings strong editing skills, deep newsroom connections and wide-ranging interests to this new position. She is currently deputy editor of the Talent Network, but she has been running the operation on her own for most of the past year while Talent Network Editor Susan Levine was dispatched to the Foreign desk.

Before joining the Talent Network, Carrie was a longtime editor on the multiplatform desk, where she handled some of the paper’s highest-profile projects and enterprise pieces. During that time, she also spent 12 years as Sunday night editor. A native of Wisconsin, Carrie graduated from the University of Minnesota, where she majored in journalism and minored in art history and Italian studies. In January, she starts a master’s program at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.
