Veteran journalists launch new book on successful media interviews

Emmy Award winning broadcast journalists Rick DeBruhl and Kevin Riggs have penned a new book, “The Insider’s Guide to Media Training: 99 Tips to Survive Your Interview in the Digital Age,” sharing their insight developed after more than 8 collective decades of experience as reporters.

The book aims to equip readers with the understanding to handle interview requests with confidence and the knowledge of what works and what does not.

“Deadlines are more punishing than ever,” says DeBruhl. “It’s critical to understand what the media wants—before you get that call.”

The book will help readers:

  • Anticipate and answer difficult questions
  • Navigate potential pitfalls
  • Understand how reporters think
  • Find the right voice in crisis situations
  • Create compelling quotes and soundbites

DeBruhl is a network broadcaster with a wide range of experience, including coverage of auto racing for networks such as ABC, ESPN, NBC and Fox Sports. Currently, he is the television voice of the Barrett-Jackson collector car auctions. He also spent 31 years as a reporter/anchor for KPNX-TV in Phoenix, covering stories throughout Arizona and globally.

DeBruhl has a Master’s degree in media management, and also runs his own communications consulting firm based in Phoenix, offering media training and executive coaching.

Riggs is a journalist with more than 3 decades of broadcast experience. He spent 17 years as an anchor and political reporter for KCRA-TV, covering the 17 years as an anchor and political reporter for KCRA-TV. He continues to work as a political analyst for KCRA-TV, and is a senior executive with Randle Communications, where he works with a wide range of business and political clients.
