Times Union names Seiler as editor

Casey Seiler

The Times Union of Albany has appointed managing editor Casey Seiler to the post of editor of the newspaper.

Seiler succeeds Rex Smith. Smith will be stepping down from his position Feb. 1.

Smith will take on the role of editor at large and continue to oversee the newspaper’s opinion pages, in addition to writing his weekly column.

He joined Times Union as an entertainment editor in 2000 and then led the state capitol reporting team. After that, he served as editor for news before being named managing editor in 2018. Before that, he was employed at the Burlington Free Press in Vermont and the Jackson Hold Guide in Wyoming.

“When I wake up in the morning and I know that I’m coming to work at the Times Union, it is working with this staff today that quickens my step and makes me happy to be coming through the door every day,” Seiler said.

A replacement for the managing editor position has not been announced yet.
