The New York Times, Verizon partner to bring newspaper access for students

The New York Times Company announced that it is partnering with Verizon to provide free nytimes.com access to over seven million students and teachers in Title I high schools across the nation and middle schools within the Verizon Innovative Learning program. The access will also include educational content from The Times’s Learning Network, an educational resource that includes articles, photos, videos, illustrations, graphs and podcasts.

With this partnership, both companies aim to reach Title I schools of which a minimum of 40 percent of the student population belongs to low-income households. This project will aim to bring educational resources and content that they need.

The Times Company and Verizon believe that it is essential to ensure that all students, regardless of their family’s economic situation, have access to quality independent journalism and the technological skills needed for critical thinking, civil dialogue, and active citizenship.

High school faculty and students will receive full digital access to The Times when connected to their school’s network, and middle school teachers will be able to access Learning Network content through the Verizon Innovative Learning Connections portal.

This program also works to empower under-resourced middle schools with free technology, internet access, and a STEM-infused curriculum to help inspire the next generation of technologists, entrepreneurs, innovators and more
