The Nation Magazine, published since 1865 will switch to a monthly publication in January. Until now, the magazine has been published every other week.
The monthly magazine will feature 84 pages instead of the current 48 pages. The Nation’s editor D.D. Guttenplan said:
“Unlike almost all of our competitors, The Nation has never made a lot of money from advertising. We have to pay attention to our readers and our donors.” Subscribers want “more of what we do in print at one time, and less often because we can then go into greater depth, we can give them more background, we can give more context, we can do more investigation.”
The Nation’s subscriptions have increased 3.8 percent this year with about 80 percent of those for print.
