Previously, he freelanced as a sports journalist at BBC Sports, where he covered the Olympics, football, rugby league and para-cycling. He was also a broadcast journalist at Sky and a sports journalist at The Telegraph. He also worked at Metro.
Mathews graduated from the University of Southampton.
