States Newsroom has launched a new nonprofit outlet, the North Dakota Monitor.

The new news site will cover politics, policy, energy, environment, agriculture and education. North Dakota Monitor will aim to focus on the areas that other news outlets are not covering.

Stories will be published online without ads or a paywall. It will also feature a free email newsletter.

Former Bismarck Tribune editor Amy Dalrymple has been named editor-in-chief. She said:

“Our team will be focused on reporting on state government, as well as other critical issues facing our state.”

Other staff members include:

  • Deputy editor Jeff Beach, who previously worked at Forum Communications, and at the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky for more than seven years. Before that, he was at the Grand Forks Herald. Beach graduated from the University of North Dakota.
  • Reporter Mary Steurer, who previously covered local government for the Casper Star-Tribune in Wyoming. Her work has also appeared in The Powell Tribune in Wyoming and The Buffalo Bulletin.
  • Michael Achterling, a radio and print journalist from Minnesota.
