Evan Smith, chief executive of The Texas Tribune, will be stepping down from his post at the end of the year after leading the nonprofit news organization for 13 years.
He will stay on as an adviser into 2023.
Smith began his career at the Texas Monthly in 1991 and served as the magazine’s top editor in 2000, leading it to two National Magazine Awards in the general excellence category.
He left in 2009 to start The Tribune with John Thornton, a venture capitalist, and Ross Ramsey, a journalist and media entrepreneur.
Smith said:
“Here’s an organization that, candidly, we didn’t know would last 13 days, let alone 13 years. We have shown people all over the world that it is possible to do this work with integrity, with revenue diversity. It’s heartening, to say the least, to see that people are seeing the value of this kind of work and are spending money to put organizations together.”
