The San Francisco Examiner has appointed Carly Schwartz as its next editor-in-chief.

In her new role, Schwartz will oversee the newsroom, along with editorial operations at The Nob Hill Gazette and SF Weekly, which all fall under the ownership umbrella of the Clint Reilly Communications company.

Schwartz joins from Google Insider, an internal news organization that she launched four years ago. There, she also held the post of editor-in-chief. She also founded Kalu Yala Media Lab, a journalism program in Panama.

She was also with The Huffington Post for more than 4 years, joining as a front-page editor. She then served as San Francisco editor and founded The Huffington Post’s San Francisco bureau in 2011. She then served as deputy national editor, a position in which she oversaw the company’s eight local news bureaus throughout the U.S.

Previously, she was an editorial intern and editorial fellow at San Francisco Magazine. She was also a contributing editor at CenterstageChicago.com. She was also an editorial intern at Map Madrid Magazine and The Hartford Courant.

Schwartz holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
