Emily Hoeven

The San Francisco Chronicle is delighted to announce that Emily Hoeven will join the Opinion team as our newest columnist and editorial writer. In her role, she will write bylined columns as well as unsigned editorials and help make crucial decisions about who The Chronicle supports during its political endorsement process.

Hoeven comes to The Chronicle from CalMatters, where she wrote the daily WhatMatters newsletter on California politics and policy. Her ability to break news and her thoughtful analysis has regularly landed her on TV, radio, podcasts and panels. She also helped launch a weekly political segment on ABC 10.

This won’t be Hoeven’s first go at writing columns; She got her start writing opinion pieces for the Mercury News and in college at the Daily Pennsylvanian. In her new role, Hoeven will keep her focus on aggressively covering state politics and policy, as well as expanding her repertoire to include cultural commentary.

A native of the Bay Area, Hoeven grew up in Fremont. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in English and French and taught English for a year in Châteauroux, France.

Hoeven starts her new job on Jan. 23.
