The San Francisco Standard, an online news organization, has tapped Julie Makinen to serve as its editor in chief. Recently, she was the executive editor of The Desert Sun and the California editor for the USA Today Network.
Makinen begins her new role in March.
Makinen is VP of the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Previously, she served as Beijing bureau chief, film editor, deputy business editor and assistant foreign editor at the Los Angeles Times.
She was deputy business editor, Asia at The New York Times and was an editor at The Hollywood Reporter.
She also wrote and edited for The Washington Post’s metro and foreign news sections.
Makinen has a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and a master’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles.
