The following was sent out from The Washington Post’s national editor Matea Gold, deputy national editor Philip Rucker, senior politics editor Dan Eggen and deputy politics editor for campaigns Sean Sullivan:
We are excited to announce that Maeve Reston is joining The Post as a national political reporter, drawing from her extensive experience covering five presidential campaigns to help us dominate coverage of the 2024 election.
Maeve has distinguished herself as one of the country’s marquee political reporters over a career that has spanned more than two decades. She comes to The Post from CNN, where she covered the 2016 and 2020 presidential races, as well as midterm elections, for both television and digital audiences. She focused in part on the politics of the western half of the United States, including through an original digital video series called MaeveWest. The series explored some of the unique challenges facing the region, including drought and immigration, and the shifting politics of Nevada, Arizona and Colorado.
Before joining CNN in 2014, Maeve spent seven years as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times.
Maeve also covered the 2004 presidential race from New Hampshire for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, later moving to Pennsylvania to roam that battleground state and others. Her first reporting job was at the Austin American-Statesman, where she covered education and the Texas legislature.
Maeve received her bachelor’s degree in English from Cornell University and her master’s degree from Dartmouth College, where her thesis was about the generational clashes within the families of the decision-makers in the Vietnam War after many of their children joined the antiwar movement.
Maeve will remain based in Los Angeles. Please join us in welcoming her.
