Peggy Santoro, a longtime leader in the Reno Gazette Journal newsroom, has been named its executive editor.

Santoro leads a team of reporters, editors and visual journalists who have consistently been recognized for their commitment to investigative journalism and breaking news.

In a career that began as a copy editor for the newspaper, Santoro has held a wide variety of newsroom roles.

She rose to become features editor and assistant managing editor during the newspaper’s most prosperous years in the 1990s and early 2000s.

In 2008, she left the RGJ and became executive editor of the Nevada Appeal, a role she held for more than two years before returning to the Reno newspaper. She again worked her way up quickly and most recently was managing editor, the second highest role in the newsroom.

Santoro replaces Brian Duggan, who led the RGJ since 2019 and recently left to become general manager of KUNR, the public radio station based at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
