The Buffalo News has appointed Sheila Rayam executive editor making her the first Black journalist and the second woman to hold the position in the paper’s 142-year history.

Recently, she served as executive editor of Gannett’s Mohawk Valley news operations, including the Utica Observer-Dispatch. Before that, Rayam spent three decades at the Democrat & Chronicle.
There she rose in ranks from copy editor to posts including entertainment editor, reporter and community engagement editor.
