The Buffalo News has appointed Sheila Rayam executive editor making her the first Black journalist and the second woman to hold the position in the paper’s 142-year history.
Rayam begins on Aug. 22 and succeeds Mike Connelly, who retired May 6.
Recently, she served as executive editor of Gannett’s Mohawk Valley news operations, including the Utica Observer-Dispatch. Before that, Rayam spent three decades at the Democrat & Chronicle.
There she rose in ranks from copy editor to posts including entertainment editor, reporter and community engagement editor.
Rayam graduated from SUNY Buffalo State.
