Parsons and Wong become deputy Asia editors for NY Times

New York Times international editor Phil Pan sent out the following:

Andy Parsons

They are two of the most accomplished beat editors you’ll find at The Times, pioneers who moved from Hong Kong and helped establish the Seoul newsroom. Now, Andy Parsons and Gillian Wong have been promoted to be deputy Asia editors, taking on added responsibility across the range of everything we cover.

Adrienne Carter, who as Asia editor managed the move to Seoul and a lot more besides, describes both as crucial partners. “Gillian and Andy are the perfect choices for our Asia leadership team: smart, insightful, with a deft editing touch,” she said. “Most important, they care about their correspondents as much as they care about their coverage.” We couldn’t agree more.

Andy has been acting deputy Asia editor since May 2022, and his steady leadership, work ethic and wry humor have helped the Seoul team get through hard times and news storms alike. Through it all, he’s also been a creative and skillful editor of coverage from South Asia, Australia and Japan who has won the praise of some of the hardest-working correspondents in the business.

Gillian Wong

As the China editor for The Times since 2018, Gill has brought deep knowledge and unstinting integrity to the job. It’s a difficult thing to keep coverage going while you’re also supporting correspondents and their families through painful times when they’ve been banned from the country they cover. Gill has done it all while helping decode one of the most momentous stories going, from the chaotic unraveling of China’s “zero Covid” policy to Xi Jinping’s tightening grip and new challenges.

Gill grew up in Singapore and started her journalism career there as a correspondent with The Associated Press, which later sent her to China. She also reported from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia and South Korea. She worked for a time as a technology correspondent at The Wall Street Journal before returning to The A.P. as China bureau chief. She joined The Times in late 2018, moving to Hong Kong after a decade in Beijing.

Please join us in congratulating them on their promotions!
