Owens appointed president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

John Owens

John Owens, a writer-producer for Chicago-based Weigel Productions and adjunct professor at City Colleges of Chicago, has been named president of the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Owens succeeds Steve Novak, who led the chapter since 2015.

For more than 33 years, Owens has been working as a freelance journalist with published news stories in the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Illinois Issues, Nieman Reports, Chicago Reader, New City, Block Club Chicago and Screen.

Owens has also worked at Chicago Tribune for more than 18 years, joining as executive producer/news editor and then holding the post of senior video producer. He also worked as an assignment editor/producer at Chicagoland Television News.

He was also assignment editor/field producer at Fox News Chicago and a reporter/editor at City News Bureau.

Owens is a B.S. in broadcasting and film from Boston University, College of Communication.
