The Online News Association has hired LaSharah S. Bunting as CEO and executive director, making her the first woman of color to hold these posts. She begins March 13.
Bunting will join the digital journalism association from Simon & Schuster, where she served as VP and executive editor. She acquired and edited nonfiction books, focused on race, class, current events, arts business, and technology.
She also served as director of journalism at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, where she managed grants and initiatives.
During more than 13 years at The New York Times, she held the posts of staff editor on the culture and metro desks, assistant editor for culture, deputy Sunday metropolitan editor, national desk news editor, national desk digital editor and senior editor for digital transition.
She also worked as a copy editor at The Dallas Morning News and interned at the Lincoln Journal Star and Newsday.
She serves on the board of directors for Outlier Media, Open Campus and Dow Jones News Fund.
Bunting graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
