Zachary Small has joined The New York Times Culture desk as a staff reporter to cover art, technology, video games and other platforms. Since 2019, they have been writing for the Culture report.

Small freelanced for the Financial Times, New York Magazine, NPR, The Nation Magazine and Artsy.

An excerpt from The Times reads:

Zach started writing for The Times after cold-pitching Barbara Graustark with an idea about public art that turned into an Arts & Leisure cover story on how an Australian couple used loopholes in the city code to install animal sculptures all over New York City.

Zach has carved out a specialty in reporting on the convergence of art and technology, as investors behind NFTs, A.I. and video games rely on cultural production to build their multibillion-dollar businesses. They recently covered, with Rumsey Taylor, the highly anticipated release of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, with an interactive look back at how the franchise changed the game.

Zach studied political science and art history at Columbia University before earning a master’s degree at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
