The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ Nestor Ramos and Steve Merelman:
We are thrilled to announce that Hurubie Meko, who joined Metro as part of our 2022 class of fellows, has been promoted to staff as a reporter covering criminal justice.
Hurubie quickly became an important part of the team covering crime, courts and the justice system, exploring a surge in the killing of city teenagers, the deep meaning of a largely ignored killing to a Bronx family and neighborhood, and the devastating aftermath of a shocking attack on the subway.
Before joining The Times, Hurubie covered gun violence at The Kansas City Star through Report for America, and was a data reporter in Lancaster, Pa., and her background as a data reporter has helped the team covering criminal justice keep a close eye on statistics at a time when crime and safety are top of mind for many in the city.
Please join us in congratulating Hurubie.
