Johanna Barr is joining New York Times Metro as a senior editor for news and planning.
In this role, she will help anchor Metro’s breaking news report while also playing a crucial role in driving the department’s overall coverage and ensuring that Times’ journalism reaches the widest possible audience.
Recently, Barr was senior politics editor at the Times. Before that, she was day editor, Express Team. In this role, she assigned, edited and wrote articles for the breaking news and general assignment desks. She also coordinated coverage of breaking and ongoing stories with desks across the newsroom.
Prior to that, she was a staff writer at the Times.
Barr also worked at HuffPost for more than 5 years, joining as a news editor and then serving as senior editor. She was also a reporter at NBC News and a research intern at Talking Points Memo. She has also served as a production intern at The Leonard Lopate Show at WNYC Radio.
Additionally, Barr has worked as a reporter/intern at City and State – Manhattan Media. She was also an editorial research assistant at The Village Voice.
Barr is a B.A. in English and Government from Skidmore College and an M.S. in Journalism and Digital Media from Columbia University – Graduate School of Journalism.
