NY Times promotes two staffers on Newsroom Development and Support team

The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ Charo Henríquez, Keith Dixon and Eric Athas:

Beena Raghavendran

Beena Raghavendran has been promoted to senior editor, digital storytelling and training. Since joining the N.D.S. team in 2021, Beena has proven herself to be a standout leader, taking on some of the newsroom’s most important initiatives.

Last year, Beena spearheaded an ambitious source diversity project in collaboration with Jacob Meschke, her N.D.S. teammate. The sourcing effort spanned 18 departments and helped reporters and editors track subject matter experts and build callouts to reach underrepresented communities.

In addition to the source diversity project, Beena has been an advocate for making journalism more accessible. Over the past year and a half, she has co-led the rollout of an initiative to write alt-text for photos, along with her teammates Rebecca Halleck, Henry Torres and Crystal Arroyo.

Prior to joining The Times, Beena was an engagement reporter at ProPublica, where she used crowdsourcing techniques to report on everything from medical debt to public housing. Last year, she completed a fellowship at the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

Jin Kim

Jin Kim has been promoted to editor, training and support, in recognition of Jin’s expanding contributions to our support team, and to our partners in the newsroom, and in product and engineering.

Jin, who was a computer science major at the University of Maryland before switching to journalism, joined N.D.S. in February 2018 as a senior staff editor for publishing support and in 2021 he was promoted to assistant editor.

Jin’s ongoing work to build useful tools for the newsroom reached new levels this year as he helped important partners like standards adopt analytical tools. And he built highly valuable integrations that connect our publishing tools to Slack and  Airtable-based planning environments, among others.

Please join us in congratulating Beena and Jin on these well-deserved promotions.
