The New York Times has appointed Sameen Amin to the post of deputy of the video department. Whitney Hurst will take on the role of executive producer of visual investigations and Malachy Browne has been named enterprise investigations director for visual investigations.

Sameen Amin
Sameen has won an Emmy, a Polk, a Murrow and a host of other awards for pieces that break news and push the boundaries of visual storytelling. In her new role, Sameen will drive our global news coverage, fostering innovation and working across the unit to make us better video journalists with stronger stories and clearer standards. She’ll oversee live visual journalism and enterprise work from around the world, including a new team in Seoul.
Whitney Hurst
Since joining The Times four years ago as a senior producer, Whitney has established herself as a formidable leader on V.I. As E.P., she’ll be charged with steering V.I.’s response to news events, pushing our reporters to advance big stories, and helping manage the overall activities of the wider team. In her new role, she will be ensuring projects across the unit hit our threshold of accountability and authority, and will continue to mentor reporters and, now, in this new role, senior producers as well. She will also be focused on helping us identify opportunities to build stronger alliances across the newsroom with other visual teams and reporting desks across the newsroom.
Malachy Browne
In his new role, Malachy will be formally tasked with identifying and running mid- and longer range investigations that have breakthrough potential to change policy and the public debate. In some cases he will serve as the lead reporter on projects, and take on a player-coach role. He will be key in helping us determine how we deploy the team, allocate resources and forge newsroom collaborations to pull these off. He will also help us assess and seize opportunities to generate scoops around emerging storylines. Beyond the news, Mal will help lead our innovation efforts by partnering with other teams to research and develop new techniques and technologies, and explore frontiers around spatial investigations, A.I. and next-generation story visualizations.
