The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times:
We are thrilled to announce that Andrew Sondern is becoming a deputy director of News Design after a remarkable run as one of our most talented and prolific print art directors.
From helping to produce some our most impactful Page One designsto designing a string of memorable Special Sections, Andrew’s contribution to the report in 2020 was seen everywhere. He also embedded with Graphics for three months this summer and fall, helping cover the pandemic and the presidential election.
Andrew is a kind and creative problem solver who is adept at working with illustrators on complex and delicate assignments, as well as a talented editor and writer.
Those in the Print Hub know firsthand how skilled Andrew is at building shapes and templates that make the paper look better and make his co-workers’ lives easier. In this new role he will focus on helping us improve the systems we work with by creating more sophisticated tools and guidelines for our work and by seeking out new avenues of feedback and design development for designers. Andrew will continue to lead our art directors in their designs of key enterprise and special sections.
Andrew started at The Times as an intern in the summer of 2015, working in the Features Art department. He joined News Design in January 2017. Before The Times, he interned at The Reading Eagle in Pennsylvania.
We are excited by what Andrew brings to this role and are confident that the paper will be better for it.
