Krista Mahr

Krista Mahr is being promoted to senior editor, international and will lead Opinion’s global coverage. She joined Opinion only recently and in a few short months has proven herself an excellent steward of our international report.

Krista came to The Times from Politico and before then she was a senior editor at Time magazine’s Washington bureau, focusing on national security and foreign policy coverage.

Before moving to Washington, Krista reported overseas for 14 years. While based in Johannesburg, she reported across Africa for NPR, the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian, among others. In New Delhi, she worked as Time’s South Asia bureau chief and Reuters’s South Asia correspondent. She was based earlier in Hong Kong for Time for five years, where she reported from Japan, China, South Korea and throughout Southeast Asia.

Krista has degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. She grew up in Los Angeles’s South Bay.

Sara Barrett has been promoted to senior photo editor.

Every week with ease, Sara manages photography for numerous columnists and the editorial board; commissions stories globally; works with our brilliant staff photographer Damon Winter; and handles late-breaking stories that need smart photo research and original photography.

Sara has been a photo editor in Opinion since 2014, first as an editor on the innovative yet short-lived Opinion app, and later as a visual editor for the editorial board, Sunday Opinion and featured columnists. She joined The Times in 2006 as a photo editor for the House and Home section, and then for several years oversaw Times staff photographers and breaking news coverage as the Metro photo assignment editor. Before coming to the paper, she supervised the photojournalism program at Columbia University, where she also taught photography for many years. In her first years in New York, she worked as a freelance photographer and photo editor. Her photographs have appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Esquire, The Times and a number of other publications, including Spy, where she was one of the original contributors. She has a B.A. from Connecticut College and an M.S. from Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

Glyn Peterson is being promoted to senior staff editor. She joined Opinion in October 2020 on contract and then was hired full-time later that year.

Before joining The Times, Glyn worked as a fact-checker for The Nation, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and Wired. She has an M.A. in literature and history from the University of Edinburgh, where she wrote her dissertation on American prison literature.

Phoebe Lett
Phoebe Lett

Phoebe Lett, the longest tenured member of the Opinion Audio team, has been promoted to senior producer.

She is currently a producer for the “Matter of Opinion” podcast, runs The New York Times Podcast Club Facebook group (which she co-created in 2017), and has contributed countless podcast recommendations and reported pieces on the audio landscape for several Times sections.

Phoebe’s tenure at The Times spans nearly a decade, having joined in 2014 as a freelance fact-checker before becoming an editorial assistant with the Editorial Board in 2015. A Georgetown alum, Phoebe was an assistant editor at the regional bridal magazine New Jersey Bride before coming to The Times, despite having never attended a wedding.

Anna Marks

Anna Marks is being promoted to staff editor. She joined Opinion nearly three years ago and immediately made a mark.

Anna joined The Times as an editorial assistant in 2020 supporting Opinion columnists, namely Frank Bruni, Gail Collins, Bret Stephens and Zeynep. Prior, she worked at The Atlantic and the New York Public Library and across the publishing industry. She is a graduate of New York University.
