Indrani Sen will start next week as the new culture vertical editor for Opinion. She joins The Times from Medium, where she was an editorial director and oversaw three publications — Forge, GEN and ZORA. Previously, she was Quartz’s culture and lifestyle editor, where she founded and ran Quartzy.
Indrani started her journalism career at weekly newspapers in Massachusetts, including her local newspaper, The Cambridge Chronicle, and The Bay State Banner. She was a reporter at Newsday, covering politics, planning, crime and breaking news; and then a freelance food writer for Saveur and other publications.
Indrani has worked as an adjunct professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York; she has edited a website showcasing New York City’s immigrant press; and she has taught journalism to Bronx high school students. She is on the board of the N.Y.C. High School Journalism Collaborative. Indrani has a bachelor’s in English literature and language from Oxford University, and a master’s in journalism from Columbia University.
Her first experience working for The New York Times was a freelance assignment from the Dining section.
Ana Becker, Digital Designer
Ana Becker is a designer, front-end web developer and artist. A graduate of the Cooper Union, Ana has been active in the field of design for over a decade. She worked on several notable projects as a graphics editor and news apps developer at the Wall Street Journal, including VR Nasdaq, The Journal’s first foray into V.R. data visualization. Ana is also a guitarist, songwriter and singer. She’s toured across the country and internationally with multiple bands, including Fruit & Flowers, Catty and more recently Habibi. Ask her about: design, data viz, the Brooklyn indie music scene, anime and quarantine cooking.
Michal Leibowitz, Editorial Assistant
Michal will be supporting David Brooks and Ross Douthat. She studied philosophy and religion at Stanford University, where she wrote her master’s thesis on the relationship between art and ethics. In her free time, Michal enjoys walking around the city and listening to audiobooks.
