NY Times news assistant Lopez departs

Oscar Lopez

Oscar Lopez has left his news assistant post at The New York Times, where he wrote and reported breaking news and in-depth features about Mexico, Central American and the Caribbean. Lopez tweets:

“It has been a truly wild two years, and I’m so proud of the work I have been able to do. But the time has come for me to move on and keep growing outside of the Gray Lady, as I work on some other ambitious projects. You will still see my byline in @nytimes from time to time, but feel free to reach out to me at oscargeorgelopez@gmail.com.”

Lopez served as an Americas correspondent at Thomson Reuters Foundation and freelanced for Newsweek, Washington Post, Vice, BuzzFeed News and the Daily Beast. He provided coverage for CNN, BBC and MSNBC.

He was a campaign writer at nonprofit organization All Out.

Lopez has a B.A. from Melbourne University and a master’s degree from the University of Oxford.
