NY Times names Yang its national editor

Jia Lynn Yang

Jia Lynn Yang has been tapped as the national editor at The New York Times. Previously, she was serving as deputy national editor at the Times.

Prior to joining the Times, Yang was with The Washington Post where she worked for more than 7 years, joining as a staff writer and then serving as the business assignment editor. Later on, she held the post of deputy national security editor.

During her time at the Post, Yang was part of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning team that shared the national reporting award with The Times.

She was also a writer for Fortune Magazine where she covered politics, economics, and a wide variety of business stories, from private equity and Wall Street to real estate, retail and tech. She has also served as an intern, Washington bureau, and as a reporting intern at the Los Angeles Times and the National Journal, respectively.

She was also an editorial assistant at Boston Review Magazine.

Yang is also the author of “One Mighty and Irresistible Tide: The Epic Struggle Over American Immigration, 1924-1965.” The book, which came out in May, was longlisted for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.

Yang is a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University.
