NY Times media columnist Smith leaving for global news startup

Ben Smith, media columnist at The New York Times is leaving to launch a global news start-up with Justin Smith, who is stepping down as CEO of Bloomberg Media.

Previously, Smith was editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed. He has also reported for Politico, the New York Observer and the New York Sun. He was also a political columnist and blogger at the New York Daily News.

Details of the new venture were not disclosed. However, Smith said:

“There are 200 million people who are college educated, who read in English, but who no one is really treating like an audience, but who talk to each other and talk to us, That’s who we see as our audience.”

He further added that he and Smith “planned to build a global newsroom that broke news and experimented with new formats of storytelling.”
