Marcela Valdes is joining The New York Times Magazine as a staff writer.
Her new role begins Feb. 1.
Valdes has been a contributing writer to The New York Times for more than 3 years now, covering politics, culture, immigration and more. Apart from The Times, her work has also appeared in The Washington Post, The Nation, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Believer, Bookforum and NPR.
Valdes initially started writing about books as a reviews editor for Publishers Weekly and a columnist for The Washington Post Book World. She was also a founding editor of Críticas, an English-language magazine devoted to Spanish-language books.
She has also twice served on the board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle.
In 2010 she received a Nieman Fellowship in Journalism from Harvard University and the Roger Shattuck Award for Criticism from the Center for Fiction.
