NY Times international desk expands London newsroom with two new hires

New York Times deputy weekend editor Kaly Soto will be joining International to help lead a new late shift in London.

Soto joined the Times in 2003 as a staff editor. Later on, she became the publication’s editor, cooking, then moved on to becoming the assistant editor, culture, before being promoted to her recent post of weekend editor.

Prior to joining the Times, Soto has worked at The Charlotte Observer as a copy editor and at The Statesman Journal as a reporter and copy editor. She was also editor-in-chief at Oregon Daily Emerald.

Soto holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from University of Oregon.

The Times has also tapped former weekend editor Philip McClellan who left the publication three years ago to join Reuters in Singapore as editor. McClellan will be working closely with Soto to lead the expanded coverage out of the London newsroom.

Apart from the Times, McClellan has served as deputy managing editor and chief editor Asia for International Herald Tribune. He was also a weekend editor, foreign desk at San Jose Mercury News. In addition, he has also worked at Agence France-Presse and Window Magazine.

McClellan is a B.A. in history from Lewis and Clark College and a M.A. in international public affairs from The University of Hong Kong.
