NY Times honored with 3 Deadline Club Awards

The New York Times was honored with three Deadline Club awards from the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for work from the Newsroom and Opinion.

Brian Rosenthal won the Local News Reporting category, honoring coverage of the New York City area.

The judges wrote:

“Brian Rosenthal connects the dots thanks to interviews (450!), a database that recorded every medallion sale since 1995 and the painstaking review of thousands of loan documents.”

Stuart A. Thompson, Charlie Warzel and Alex Kingsbury won in the Opinion Writing category. The judges called the work a “masterly effort combining the best of investigative and opinion journalism.”

The Times was also a winner in the Spot News Photo category for the iconic photo by Matthew Abbott of a kangaroo hopping through the bush fires in Lake Conjola, Australia.

The judges commented:

“The moment is impeccably preserved in color, composition and movement. We feel the desperation, the urgency and the anxiety not only of the kangaroo but of an entire nation and the world.”

Additionally, the publication was a finalist in two categories; one for the Daniel Pearl Prize for Investigative Reporting for Michael H. Keller, Gabriel J.X. Dance and Nellie Bowles’s investigation and also in the Arts Reporting category.
