NY Times hires Hughes to oversee health and science

Virginia Hughes

The New York Times has appointed Virginia Hughes as its new editor in the health and science department.

Her new role begins June 22.

Previously, Hughes was deputy editor-in-chief at BuzzFeed, a post she was promoted to after four years working as a science editor at the company. Prior to that, Hughes was working as a freelance writer covering numerous topics including genetics, neuroscience and medicine.

She worked for National Geographic, Popular Science and other publications.

Hughes has also worked at Science Blogs/Seed Media Group as a community manager/editorial assistant/contributing editor. Additionally, she has also interned at Discover Magazine and National Public Radio.

She was also a writing fellow for Johns Hopkins Magazine.

Hughes is a B.S. in neuroscience from Brown University and a M.A. in science writing from The Johns Hopkins University.
